Hi, interesting review. I own and regularly wear a Blue Mako, a Black Mako and a Black Monster. Here are my impressions.
Movement - Out of the box the Seiko Monster is more accurate but both are well inside the claimed accuracy. Neither movement can be hacked or wound. The lock down day adjuster on the Mako is handy and looks pretty cool, however I feel the day feature is not really required
Band - Seiko is the better band
Lume - Same however Seiko has more so it is easier to read in dark.
Case Design - Comes down to personal preference. Good points about Mako are colored bezel, easy to read, traditional looking, quite rugged. Good points about Monster case are easy to turn bezel (however the notches may be disliked by some), domed shape and recessed glass offers protection to lens against strikes, nice bezel protection at top and bottom of case, easy to adjust crown, the shoulders where the band attaches are chunky and squared off, a look that i like, the Monster is the bomb of indestructible tool like watches.

Both are great watches. For me the seiko is the better watch.

Seiko is Seiko. It is like comparing a Jaguar with a Skoda. The Seiko monster is a design classic. The Mako is a Citizen submariner, an instantly forgettable run of the mill mass produced watch. I am sorry, but there is absolutely no comparison. Maybe the Mako versus some non-descript Seiko 5 would be a more fair contest... If I would want accurate time keeping, I would buy a 15$ quartz disgrace. I am sorry, but this is really not about accuracy (within reason).

"both watches are dependable divers. Both display the ‘Diver’s Logo’, which indicates the ISO6425 standard for waterproofing, legibility, luminosity, shock resistance, anti-magnetism, and band solidity."

Unfortunately, this is not true: from the two watches only Seiko Monster is ISO6425 certified; Mako maybe meets the ISO2281 requirment but definately not the more strong DIVER'S ISO6425 (for instance: missing indication that the watch is running, usually indicated by a running second hand with a luminous tip or tail.

Based on that I am sorry to say that the Mako is not a diver's watch... is still safe for snorkeling and swimming pool activities tough, but don't do serious diving with it.

For more info on ISO6425/ISO2281 check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Resistant_mark

I have the newer bigger Mako and in comparing it to the Monster, I give the Monster edge.

Mako wins on movement but the Mako falls short on the bracelet with folded end links and well below average lume.

Monster is just a better built watch with better features.

Also, both the new and old Mako lack a feature necessary for these watches to be functional dive watches. Old Mako does not have a lume reference dot on the second hand which disqualifies it as a functional dive watch and New Mako does not have a lume reference pip at the 60 position on the bezel which disqualifies it as a functional dive watch.

All in all, not a fair fight if we're talking dive watches...Monster by a TKO.

Some people can live with an automatic watch maintaining under 20 seconds a day. Others might choose a quartz to keep the time accurately (in general case). I agree that Orient automatic watches are great in maintaining the time right out-of-the-box. But there's not always a guarantee that every piece being produced has the same accuracy. Noone would guarantee you in this case.
Now let's talk about diver's watch. If you decide to go along with Orient Mako diving underwater, you CAN NOT see whether it's still running or not, because it has no lume on the second hand. And THAT is one risk using the Mako under deep water.
Let's keep the Mako for its great time-keeping, not for diving.

The bottom line for purchasing a watch is accurate timekeeping. The one "outstanding" feature of all the Orient watches is there incredible ability to maintain the "correct" time. When I first read reviews about a Mako diving watch loosing 2 seconds a day in a comparison test with an Invicta diving watch, I realized this was very hard to beleve! I purchased an Orient "World Time" watch. A month has expired and incredibly I have not had to reset it. Plain and simple, especially if you are diving, the last thing you would not want to happen to you is running out of air underwater, because your watch was off. Remember, a Swiss made watch with this type of accuracy will cost $1,500.00 and up!

Seiko Monster is in a different league, it's an ISO 6425 diver's watch with its exceptional design. I don't think it's appropriate to put it in comparison with Orient Mako.
Anyway, let's make things straight: Orient's company is owned by Seiko Corporation. But the movement is still originated from the long-time very-credible Orient in-house movement. So the Mako's movement is NOT based on 7s26.
All in all, the point is: Mako is definitely worth buying for its price range, while Monster is a tough piece that has really become one of the best icon in diver's line.

I think this kind of article hurts the credibility of a watch company I understood is in the seiko family. At this price point if someone is interested in automatic watches, he's probably open to own both of theses. Comparing the monster vs the mako so weakly and coming out with a strong conclusion is something I would expect from invicta. Not Orient. I actually came to the site to look at a blue mako I could PVD and wear with black T and jeans, but I'm kind of turned off. Orient doesn't need to do that bull...

Great words by the reviewer and Ovidiu. But I think the best comparison to Mako is SKX007 or the orange dial SKX011 which is more dressy. The monster is in its own league and style. It is more toolish and 'original' too.

Some corrections on my previous post, regarding "Bracelet", what I meant to say was that Mako is missing the divers extension.

Sorry also for the large number of spelling mistakes :(
