Big and robust are key defining characteristics of sports watches, and the Orient Speedtech Chrono and Auto fulfil these criteria faithfully, and them some. The Speedtech lineup from Orient Watch was conceived with the task of expressing speed and motion in a timepiece, matching the design cues set by the Subaru BRZ GT300. The result was the Speedtech Chrono and Speedtech Auto.

Chronographs have long been associated with motorsports and with obvious reasons, you have to know long it takes the car to get from the start line to the finish line. The Speedtech Chrono is uber capable of measuring this, in fact, measuring it to 1/100th of a second. Now that is precise. Equipped with either a black dial with orange accents or a Subaru blue with red accents, the high contrast dial won’t leave you squinting to read the subdials. This movement is sealed up in a 47mm combination stainless steel and aluminum case. The aluminum has been colored Subaru blue for added style points and circles the outer bezel. A carbon fiber piece has been added to the joint where the bracelet meets the case, blending the bracelet into the case wonderfully and evoking the grill of the GT300 simultaneously.  Rated for a 100m depth rating, the Speedtech Chrono doesn’t shy away from the water either and topped out with a sapphire crystal, the dial will be looking clear despite spending time in the pits. Mounted on a stainless steel bracelet with solid end links, this watch has a great presence on the wrist that’ll transition quickly from the race track to a casual night out.

Not all race watches need to be chronos, some wearers only require 3 hands to tell the time. The Speedtech Auto is a simple 3 hander, but with quite a few tricks up its sleeve. The engine inside the Speedtech Auto is the ORIENT in house caliber 40R56 movement, which is automatic winding, hand winding and hacking. It also features a power reserve indicator, its easy to think of it as the watch’s fuel gauge. Running on fumes? A few quick turns of the crown and you are back in business. The movement can be seen through the semi skeleton dial, the cut outs evoke the air outlets on the BRZ. Black carbon fiber is used for the dial’s material, an uncommon choice, but one that fits the motif of the watch beautifully.  Circling the inner dial is the rotating bezel, controlled by the crown at the 4 o’clock position. Measuring at 45mm in diameter, the Speedtech Auto has a larger presence, but thanks the the curved lugs, the case hugs the wrist extremely comfortably and never feels clunky. The Speedtech Auto is available on either stainless steel or rubber. The rubber strap offers a lighter weight option and has been modeled after the air outlets featured on the GT300. Both the stainless steel version and rubber version offer the same carbon fiber accent to bring further visual interest to the watch and act as a lovely transition from case to bracelet or strap.
