Sad news in the horology community: English watchmaker George Daniels passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011.

George Daniels was one of the great modern contributors to horology.  He invented the co-axial escapement, a modern watch escapement mechanism, that is considered one of the greatest modern horological advancements.

Mr. Daniels was one of the few watchmakers who could complete an entire watch by hand. Every watch was created from scratch is his own lab without the use of automatic tools.  He created 37 watches throughout his tenure.

Mr. Daniels authored a number of publications on watches and his history.  He was one of the most decorated watchmakers in the world, having been awarded the CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list and being the only watchmaker ever to receive the honour of ‘Master Watchmaker, for services to Horology.’

The entire horology community mourns the loss of this great man.

Check out George Daniels’ website for a complete history of his achievements.
