Hi Mark,

I wanted to respond to you with news about the Orient I ordered as indicated below.

First things first, I have never owned a “real” watch before. I’ve had plenty of the $10 ones found in drug stores and gas stations, which work to provide the time for a while until the battery dies or they’re caught in the rain, but never one that could be considered quality manufacturing. The closest thing would be a watch my grandfather gave me just before he passed away. It is a gold chronograph, made in Switzerland by a local jewelry shop there. He acquired it while guarding a Nazi prison in WWII, and wanted to pass it on to me. It still runs well, and I wear it on special occasions, but it is far too valuable sentimentally to wear it day-to-day.

This is where Orient comes in. As a recent college graduate I wanted to get a professional watch that I could wear to the office and look like an adult. I also hoped that someday I could pass it on to my son or grandson. But I also work as an outdoors adventure guide, so I also wanted something I could take on a kayaking or hiking trip and look somewhat sporty. I followed the orientalwatchsite.com Deal of the Day for nearly 2 months, regularly reviewing the model and its features. Each trip I saved a portion of my tips for a watch, and committed to buying an Orient. I’m not sure why I made that commitment, but I think it has something to do with the pride you take in your work, combined with low prices that don’t communicate expensive and pretentious. When I received a first time buyer code for 50% off, I knew it was time.

I went with a black 2ER000 diver.

It was everything I’d ever hoped for. I loved the bezel and the sound it made at each click, perfectly lining up with the corresponding minute. I loved the smooth flow of the second-hand, gliding around the dial. It felt so solid on my wrist, yet not too heavy. The screw-down crown seemed impervious to damage, and I was impressed with how well it locked in place (a feature not on the crown on my grandfather’s watch). By far, the quality I was most found of, was that there was no battery and no winding (as is required with my grandfather’s). Within seconds of wearing it the second hand began to move, and it never stopped afterward even after taking it off for the night. I know how it works, but it still amazes me.

Unfortunately, this past Sunday I was leaving my apartment to lead a hiking trip and I was mugged by two men. The first thing they took was the watch, but I have the bruises to prove that I fought for it. As they ran off with my watch and cell phone, I heard them excitedly discuss how much the watch will fetch them when they sell it. As sad as I was, I smiled knowing that I had selected a quality watch (and that in their excitement to get it off my wrist they neglected to take my wallet as well).

So, to make a long story short, I would like to thank you for making such quality watches and offering them at affordable prices, so that people who work in blue collar jobs can enjoy fine craftsmanship as well. And thank you, indirectly, for helping me retain my wallet. Once again, I’ve made a commitment that the next watch I buy will be an Orient.

Regards,

I hope you get a replacement soon and good to hear you were not badly injured.

I concur – glad you were not hurt and I agree with your comments. Orient is producing some great watches. I recently purchased a quartz chrono, but I can’t wait to get the 2ER. It’s style is not over the top like some other brands, and everything I’ve read tells me the movements are excellent.

I’ve had an eye on this model for a while now but can’t seem to find a retailer in my region. Anyone know where I can buy this in Pakistan?

I also wish you the best with the muggers in the future.

I have the same watch and it also is a good, dependable, solid watch at a very good price. I removed the stainless bracelet and replace with a black padded leather strap, not because there was anything wrong with the bracelet but because I prefer straps as opposed to bracelets. I also have a Seiko divers watch and I have had nothing but problems with it. I have had it for 1 1/2 years and have only been able to wear it for about 3 months total. It is a nice rugged looking watch but the auto movement is not rugged by any means. The watchmaker is not sure why it will not continie to run for more than a couple of days. Finally, I decided not to spend any more money trying to repair the loser Seiko and decided to get the Orient Diver. I first heard of Orient about two years ago. I have a friend who is a seaman aboard an ocean going cargo vessel. I see him once every couple of years. The last time I saw him he was wearing an Orient Crystal 21 jewel automatic. When I asked him to show me the watch it had a lot of scratches on it. He told me that he had the watch for about 14 years, he had purchased it in Cartagena, Colombia. He wears it everyday, he even sleeps with it. Out at sea, it is one of the tools that you depend on every moment. His watch has been around the world several times, having been doused with salt water often while underway. He told me that he has never had it serviced and only has to re-set the time once every 3 weeks. I was very impressed, however, since there are no Orient watch places here in Texas I could not get one. That is until I discoverd Orient Watch USA. I am very pleased with my Orient Divers # 2ER00001B. I don’t expect to ever repair my loser Seiko Divers watch and will instead spend my money on Orient automatic watches. I already have a couple that I intend to get in the future (a power reserve, and one of the executive series models). I strongly endorse Orient automatic watches and am not shy to show off my watch to almost everyone I run into.

    Best regards,
