Orient CTD09001B: A Cool Quartz Watch

April 15th, 2010 | 6 Comments

What has a quartz movement, a chronograph and a black dial with a bunch of numbers in the middle?

Give up? It’s a watch, of course. But not just any watch, it’s the CTD09001B from Orient.

Read on to learn more about:

What’s good about the CTD09001B

The Orient CTD09001B has a lot of notable features including a slide rule bezel.

The slide rule bezel is the ring on the outside of the watch case. A logarithmic scale is printed on the bezel. The scale is to be used in conjunction with fixed rules of mathematics, so you can figure out general mathematical calculations with the help of the slide rule.

That may seem a little over-complicated, but learning how to use your slide rule is easier than it sounds, so give it a try.

Here are some of the other features on the CTD09001B:
  • Orient Japan Analog Quartz Movement
  • Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating
  • Stainless steel case and band
  • 100m water resistance
  • Date calendar
  • Multi-eyes for alarm, minute and seconds
  • $350 price tag

Not to mention, watches with a quartz movement are known for their timekeeping precision. While automatic watches are classic, their timekeeping is often inaccurate or off by a few seconds or, in the worst case, minutes. Though that may not matter to some, others will always prefer a quartz movement.

Read on to learn about the CTD09001B’s most notable feature: the chronograph.

The chronograph feature

Like most of Orient’s Sporty quartz watches, the CTD09001B has a chronograph feature.

This means that the watch has both timekeeping and stopwatch ability.

The chronograph feature dates back to the early 18th century when it was used (somewhat unsuccessfully) on pocket watches. The feature was popularized during the 1820s and again with the rise of aviation and race car driving in the early 20th century.

The feature is still useful and desirable today because it allows the wearer to set an alarm, a reminder or to accurately time an event. Be sure to check out (and try) the many other uses for your chronograph.

The watch really looks impressive in the video, with the thin case and anti-reflective sapphire. I’m torn because I think “real” watches are mechanical, but I’m tempted by this quartz beauty. Wish it was available in all-white with a classic silver case.
