ORIENT CERAL001B Automatic Watch

October 15th, 2009 Posted in Previous DOD's | 16 Comments

This model is part of Orient’s Water Resistant 100m collection. What makes this watch great is that it’s a mechanical self-winding watch. What that means is that when you wear the watch during your daily wear, the energy of the movement from your arm is used to wind a spring inside your watch. That spring, with the use of micro mechanics, stores that energy and utilizes it for time keeping.

This entire mechanism is called a mechanical movement. That means no batteries or electronic components. What makes Orient a great choice is that they use their own in-house movement. Orient designed and manufactures their own movement, which in uncommon throughout in the industry.

The dial is black with red accents used for the second hand as well as the markings for the minute/second hands within the hour indexes. The 12, 3 & 6 hour indexes use a modern font that sets the tone of the watch. The indexes are luminescent so that it is appropriate to wear during the evening. The shape of the case and the use of a modern dial allow the wearer to use this in a professional as well as a casual setting.

This 100m case uses rigid lines on the case to make the watch stand out. The crystal uses a magnified lens for the date so that it is easier to read. Notice how the lines of the crystal extend to the case.

The crown is located on the 3 position and has shoulders on the top and bottom to protect the crown. The crown is screwed down by design to protect the case from water damage, and its function allows the user to adjust time as well as the date wheel.

The DOD is dead. For a long time I figured this was the only dod site, and I was way off! I now realize this site is offering below average deals compared to other watch sites. While I still love Orient watches, the competition just got way more stiff. Chronoshark anyone? Bring the old deals back Orient or you will fall by the wayside. It’s not too late!

@Eric – The problem with other DOD sites, at least for me, is that they very seldom have watches I’m interested in. I’m impressed with Orient’s models, so when I find one I like at a good price, I can be tempted into impulse buying it. Chronoshark has been doing a good job of tempting me lately, especially now that they’ve featured a couple of Casio models, so I can always hope that they will feature some more g-shocks. That said, it’s pretty rare to find a mechanical/automatic watch on any of the other sites, with the exception of bling daily. The problem there, is that I’m very unlikely to impulse buy a Maurice Lacroix watch at $1000 + even if it is a great deal. My watch budget forces me to be very directed when it comes to watches above a certain price point. So for me, it’s sad to see the Orient DOD site price increase, especially when I can usually find the same piece from another seller at very close to the same price point. To illustrate, this exact model is available at a lower price from another seller. I won’t advertise for the other seller, and I don’t think they are a U.S. authorized Orient dealer, but if you want to find out who it is, just do a web search on the model number. I agree, it’s not too late to bring back the good deals. 30% just isn’t that much of a discount on a DOD site.

As for this watch, I think it probably looks fantastic in person. The detailing on the dial looks amazing from the pictures here. I don’t like goldtone, and I especially don’t like the non-standard lugs. I also think the red 5, 10, 15, etc. numbers distract from what would otherwise be a very versatile watch. I think without those numbers it could go from very casual to being worn with a suit with no problems. With the numbers it stays pretty casual.

Sweet looking watch. Price is not too bad plus free shipping.

While I can appreciate the style of this watch it is not for me. I like the 9 o’clock date window, and the overall shape/style of the case, but the color scheme is just a little bold for my liking.

Another gold tone watch that I like. But the deal is not such a deal! Come on, guys!! Where are the REAL deals?

Come on, ORIENT. Let’s have some real DOD!!!

I’m a sucker for a unique magnifier…really sets it apart. The rest of the package isn’t quite my style but there’s a keen appreciation there for what it is.

Like the overall style of the watch. And I do not see the point in the DOD complaints. Being a pilot and a watchmaker who has opened both my IWC´s and Orient´s, I see that some people is not appreciating the crafmanship required for this quality of MECHANICAL watch. This is not a Casio or a Timex. Sorry guys, but if you want cheap you should stay with quartz. It is cheap! Orient´s mechanicals are both difficult and expensive to produce. Much of its build is made by hand by expert hands. IWC´s, Rolexes and other mechanicals are 50 times as expensive, so, these are good deals in my opinion.

I think this appears to be a very nice watch at a decent price. With the holidays coming up it will make a great gift for someone and still allow me to stay in my holiday budget!

Nice looking watch. I am doing “Christmas idea” shopping and this might go on my list. Personally I love the battery free mechanism. I never was a fan of the battery powered watches, as I come from a long line of family members that tend to “drain” the battery, spontaneously:-(

Beautiful watch. Excellent blend of formal and sporty. Might be a little too thick for formal wear, but I would still consider owning it.
