Just wondering if others sometimes have the same trouble as I do reinserting the stem into the movement?

After taking the stem out and doing what I have to do, when I go to reinsert the stem into the movement, I quite often have a problem.  It is sometimes hard to reinsert or it does not move from position to position as it is pulled out.  Occasionally, I have had to give up on the movement because I cannot get the stem back in properly.

What am I doing wrong?  My procedure is that I locate it in the hole where it has been removed until I feel resistance, then I depress the button or lever and push further in.  Sometimes I cannot even get it past the first feeling of resistance.

The castle gear is most likely getting displaced when the movement is out of the watch and the stem is not inside.  The castle gear in the keyless works has some side to side play when the stem is out, the stem holds it in place axially.

In general, replace the stem in the movement when the movement comes out of the watch case, this will prevent the castle gear from too much lateral movement.

Hope this helps, either the above or new bi-focals?  ha ha :OP
But honey, I've only bought 2 watches so far this year, I'm SO doing better!

Which movement? If you are referring to Orient I have never had a problem and I will encase four or five a day. I do not always replace the crown in the movement once removed just depends what I am working on. Do not use much force just insert until you feel resistance then rotate crown slowly and continue with the gentle pressure and the stem will fall in place when it is aligned correctly. A light touch is something I have had to learn.Hope this helps

Thanks Ken and Gary for the info.  The movements are older Orient movements.  It would seem that I would need to do a bit of sideways tapping on the movement to get the castle gear to relocate a bit?  Posted Image

Gary, do you press the button or lever when reinserting the stem or is that unnecessary?

It is not necessary to depress when replacing the stem. Just take your time and you will get a feel for it as Chris says.

you can turn the crown back and forth just a bit to get it to align with the gears in there too, often helps me anyway.

Thanks Chris,

It just seemed to be happening over and over again.  I'd put a new dial and hands on a working movement and no longer be able to get the stem back in.  Very frustrating indeed.  I will try all your suggestions.  Thanks Ken, Gary and Chris.

One thing I can say for sure is. There is never a lack of support for anyone when it comes to Orient. There are enough Old Dogs around and they all are quick to give a tip. That is one reason I love this forum. Rather than jump on we jump in and give a hand.

Absolutely Gary.  One can be assured that there will not be a sarcastic response or nasty comment to a question here.  Posted Image Great place to visit.
