Japan Automatic Watch: Orient & Seiko

Two of the most popular watch companies that produce Japanese automatic watches are Orient and Seiko. Both companies are known for high quality automatic watches. Both companies also got started in Japan, yet today, their watches are known and sold throughout the world market.

All About Seiko

The company got its start in 1881 when Kintar? Hattori opened a watch and jewelry shop called K. Hattori in Tokyo, Japan. In 1892, he began to make clocks under the name of Seikosha. It was not actually until 1924 that the first watches produced under the Seiko brand appeared. Seiko is a Japanese word that means “exquisite,” “minute” or “success.”

Seiko produces other electronic devices, but watches are their main business. In fact, in 2001, Seiko's watch division became an independent company known as Seiko Watch Corporation. Seiko Corporation of America is responsible for distribution of Seiko watches and clocks in the U.S (headquarters are located in New Jersey). The models available in America are typically a smaller subset of the full line produced in Japan.

Seiko's automatic watches are highly sought after by collectors. The Seiko “5” series is the most common.

The “5” stands for the five essential features of the watch:
    [*:3qondpfs]Shock resistant
    [*:3qondpfs]Water resistant
    [*:3qondpfs]Automatic
    [*:3qondpfs]Day display
    [*:3qondpfs]Date display
Also popular, are the luxury Credor, King Seiko, and Grand Seiko Lines. Seiko is a premier Japanese watchmaker http://www.amazon.co...1&pf_rd_i=seikoof remarkable automatic watches today.

All About Orient

Orient http://www.orient-watch.com/ is Japan's largest producer of automatic watches. It was first established in Tokyo http://www.puritime.com/ in July of 1950 as a manufacturer of wristwatches. Its forerunner dates back to 1901 when Shogoro Yoshida, the founder, opened a wholesale store of watches in Ueno, one of the commercial districts in downtown Tokyo. Since its foundation, Orient has dedicated itself to developing products that meet the needs of consumers worldwide.

In the Japanese market, Orient supplies high-quality watches, like the "Orient Royal," an exceptionally prestigious automatic watch series. In the United States, Orient's main system of distribution is through online sales directly at Orientwatchusa.com and Amazon.com.

The product lines available in the U.S. http://www.orientwat...com/watches.php are:
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Star
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Diver Automatic
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Executive
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Lady Automatic
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Urban Styling
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Power Reserve
    [*:3qondpfs]Orient Racing Automatic
Orient sets itself apart from the other major Japanese watch companies by focusing on self-winding automatic watches. Throughout its sixty-year history, the watch company has contributed to several important technological advances in watchmaking efficiency. These include the development of power-reserve indicators and use of in-house movement production http://www.europasta...t_id=1003702709 of watches within the hundred-dollar price range.

Purchasing a Japan Automatic Watch

The Orient name may not be as well known as the Seiko name, but there are plenty of reasons why you should purchase an Orient automatic watch. Their new dramatic and technologically advanced models, the solid stability of the company for over half a century, and an outstanding reputation for offering excellent and affordable watches are just a few of these reasons.

The Orient Watch Company from Japan has produced more than 80 million automatic watches in-house since the 1950s. Orient manufactures and distributes more than two million watches a year, over one million of which are automatic watches with in-house movements.

The 50-year experience in micro-precision technology is one of the reasons they are able to produce such large quantities of quality mechanical movements. Therefore, if you’re interested in purchasing a Japanese automatic watch of first-rate quality that comes from a company with an outstanding reputation, Orient is your best bet.

In the paragraph about Orient and Japan you should be linking to this site, not Orient USA or Puritime.  Orient USA and Puritime are not the makers of these watches..

There is an International audience on this forum..

Yes, this authoritative page says (without any elaboration) that the company was set up in July 1950. However, this similarly authoritative page says that some time in 1951 Tama Keiki (a company set up some time in 1950, and based on Yoshida) merely changed its name to Orient (actually, Oriento Tokei).

I don't think Orient now sells any "Star Royal" in Japan. "Orient Star", or "Royal Orient". For what such names are worth.

Yes the information is a little outdated so far as the models Orient sells in Japan.

As mentioned by hohoho.  Maybe substitute "Royal Orient" for "Orient Star Royal" which appears to be no longer be offered.  I think "Orient Star" could get a mention here.

I made the line name replacement as per your suggestions and also changed the link to Orient's main site.

As for the history, I kept it as is, because I think it sounds more authoritative and simple than an alternative. I also couldn't find information on Tama Keiki. However, if you think this is a necessary change, here is what I came up with as a replacement:

Orient is Japan's largest producer of automatic watches. There are two stories as to how it started.

The first story claims it was first established in Tokyo in July of 1950 as a manufacturer of wristwatches. Its forerunner dates back to 1901 when Shogoro Yoshida, the founder, opened a wholesale store of watches in Ueno, one of the commercial districts in downtown Tokyo.

The other story holds that in 1951, Yoshida-based Tama Keiki, a company set up some time in 1950, changed its name to Oriento Tokei.

Regardless of how it started, one thing remains clear: since its foundation, Orient has dedicated itself to developing products that meet the needs of consumers worldwide.

Please let me know if the article is ready as it is, or if you think this additional change or others is necessary. Then, I'll pass it along for publication.

Thanks for your help!

That now sounds terribly obscure. I'd keep this part of your story in the original, short form. I think it's a slight oversimplification, but even if I'm right it does not mislead in any significant way.
