Buy an Automatic Watch – Make it Easy on Yourself
January 1st, 2010 Posted in Orient News | 6 Comments | Comment and Win a Free Orient Watch Comment and Win a Free Orient WatchThe popularity of automatic watches has dramatically increased over the past 10 years. It’s hard to argue that there’s nothing special about them; they offer several improvements in multiple dimensions, outside of just keeping good time. Yet, keeping good time is undoubtedly the most important function of a watch; otherwise, there’s no point to have it.
So, what is the point to having an automatic watch? That question can be answered by answering a few more:
- What is an automatic watch?
- How does it work?
- Why buy one?
- Are they affordable?

What is an automatic watch?
It’s a watch that uses an automatic movement to wind the watch. The movement of a watch is the mechanism responsible for keeping time. With an automatic movement, the watch is wound by the motion of the wearer’s arm and is designed so it never needs a battery. For this reason, they are known as self-winding or perpetual watches.
Automatic watches use a rotor (a metal weight) which is attached to the winding mechanism. The rotor is free to pivot on the movement. This way, the slightest motion will move the rotor, and in turn, wind the mainspring to power the watch.
Simply wearing the watch will wind it; there’s no need to wind the crown. It’s done automatically for you.
However, should you feel the urge, many watches can be manually wound. In this case, if the watch is not worn for an extended period of time, it’s recommended that the watch be manually wound occasionally to keep the parts lubricated.
A fully wound watch typically can last from 36 to 48 hours.

Why buy an automatic watch?
Apart from offering convenience and utility, automatic watches help protect the environment. Since they are automatic, there are no polluting batteries to dispose of. These watches run on clean, kinetic energy.
Some might think that if a watch is automatic, it compromises accuracy. While this can be true of some automatics, most are reliable and accurate within +/- 30 seconds.
This can vary depending on the quality of the movement.

Are they affordable?
Here are some accurate automatics that won’t break your bank:

The Orient Day/Date Automatic Watch
Orient’s timepiece is water resistant up to 50 meters, has a stainless steel case, and screw down crown.
Just like all other Orient watches, this watch uses one of Orient’s in-house movements. This means that the movement was installed by an Orient professional, by hand. It was not imported from a supplier. This kind of meticulous care helps to ensure quality moments, and thus, accurate watches.

Some people may be more in the market for an automatic watch than others, but no watch wearer is out of the market. Whether you wear the watch daily, occasionally or rarely, automatic watches require little maintenance for the durability and accuracy they deliver. They are great for anyone, from a watch beginner to a watch enthusiast.

The Orient Day/Date Auto is a good looking watch. I’m partial to black dials and white hands. The red second hand makes everything pop. A great combination. Good work.

I’ve always been a fan of automatic watches, primarily Seiko 5 watches. I was not familiar with Orient automatic watches until I saw a youtube review on the Orient Mako diver watch. I ordered one, and was amazed on the extremely high quality and attention to detail of my new Orient Mako diver watch. it is extremely accurate and I like the fact Orient manufacture their own “in-house movement” for their automatic watches, specially in an affordable automatic watch. I am now a proud Orient fan and will soon be adding more Orient automatic watches to my watch collection.
